| International human rights law is often regarded as having its roots in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. It served as the model for numerous international human rights treaties that are now enforceable by law. It continues to serve as a source of inspiration for all of us, whether we are addressing injustices, resolving disputes, living in oppressed countries, or working to ensure that everyone can enjoy their human rights.

We spoke with Andrew Gilmour, the UN’s Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, to better understand the impact of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over the past 70 years.

According to Article 26 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights: (1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

Today is Human Rights Day! It is celebrated annually across the world on December 10th every year. The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on December 10, 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations. We should remember our human rights every day, but on December 10th we should remember them a little bit more!
