We have a 2 and 4 year old sharing one room, and they wanted bunkbeds - but the concern was to make it a toddler-friendly bunkbed ....

The top bunk of the Kura bed is fairly low compared to true bunk beds and the bottom bunk would be on the floor which is ideal for our 18 month old.

It is now time for our oldest to move into the top, but needed stairs instead of a ladder so we hacked a Bunk Bed Stairs from the IKEA Trofast with rails.

So many people asked after I posted in the stories, so here are some facts regarding the girls’ bed 😊 1) none of them has fallen off the bed 2) the bed is from ikea and it’s called Kura. 3) the stairs: it is actually a bookshelf also from Ikea, called Trofast. 4) the little fence: I bought it in one of those “dollar” stores they LOVE their bed! ❤️🌸❤️🌸

We’ve seen some great examples of folks using IKEA’s ubiquitous Trofast storage system as stairs (see here and here). And now here’s another we spotted over at Ikea Hacker.This child’s loft bed is a custom piece. Check out Ikea Hacker’s post for a description of how the owners built this. We love the idea of using Trofast as both storage and steps. Anybody do something similar?

Storage underfoot. That’s one way to make the most of the space underneath the stairs. We spied this idea in one of the Chinese home decor mags we picked up on the trip. See a close up under the cut:This type of storage offers easy access to what’s in the pull out plastic drawers. A great use if it’s near a home office so that you could store all of your materials. COuld also be a great place to store winter clothes in the summer, or summer clothes in the winter.

The bed, having a very high edge, was too tall for a TROFAST step unit stairs hack and therefore we had to add a STUVA wardrobe to create storage steps.
