A tall vase of cut sunflowers gleams with subtle color variations against a painted wall. The brushstrokes are thickly applied and alive with texture. Erin's contemporary impressionism paintings of sunflowers were originally inspired by the sunflower paintings of van Gogh. Erin's modern take on impressionism is called Open Impressionism, a style now taught in art schools worldwide.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.
