A new field of agriculture has recently sprung up called agrivoltaics – the combination of agriculture and photovoltaics (the science of solar power). In a rare, true ‘win-win’, this farmer has been making extra money by selling surplus electricity they generate from the solar panels used to power the farm. Without losing farmland! By planting vegetables underneath solar panels, recent results suggest that not only do plants thrive – their yields actually increase.

Even though the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) is yet to sign the power sale agreement with discoms, after a long gap, there has been some encouraging movement in the manufacturing sector. Despite GoI’s hard work on policy changes, India’s manufacturing capacity of modules and cells is not more than 9 GW and 1 GW, respectively.

The current total solar photovoltaic generation capacity installed worldwide is 303 GW. This single solar farm would account for a similar installed capacity as the entire world's capacity in 2015, and over a thousand times more than we had in 2000.
