Step 1. Put a visual dot in the center. Step 2. Draw 4 arms from the center either off the page at the sides or at the corners. As the arms go out they should spread apart from each other or get wider as they go out. Step 3. Write your name in capital letters inside the arms. Always start at the dot and work out. Make sure the letters of your name touch the top and the bottom of each line. The letters will get bigger as they go out. Keep writing the letters of your name until you are out of…

Color It Like you MEAN it!: 5th grade | Middle school art projects, 4th grade art, 8th grade art

We had some beautiful snow a couple of weeks ago and a few school delays, so my classes are a little behind on the projects they started at the beginning of January. I wanted to post a few in progress pictures of the pinecones that my 4th and 5th graders are working on. I have really enjoyed this one so far and I will definitely be adding it to my regular list of projects for winter. The students have learned about so many of the elements of art AND principles of design with this one. We've…

Sixth Grade Art with Mrs. Baxter: Animal Zentangle Project

Our first summative project has drawn to a close in 6th grade art (Get it? drawn to a close...). Students learned about observational drawing, contour drawing, line, value, shape, and color. Students began by drawing a contour of an animal of their choice and then filling it with at least 8 abstract line patterns (a doodle process called "zentangling"). They then traced over their lines with Sharpie marker. Next, students learned how to create a watercolor wash for their background. They…

First Friday Art Class for February 2014 - Let Them Draw Cake! | Art worksheets, School art projects, Elementary art projects

This being February and the month of Valentine's Day, I decided we'd draw a bunch of sweet treats and fun food this month. So our treat had to be sweet and fun too, right? Cake Balls are most certainly sweet and fun... (mine still never look as good as Bakerella's but they sure are tasty!) We began in our sketchbooks just drawing some basic, fun, cute food. I drew on the white board and the girls drew with me in their sketchbooks. Some of these drawings came from the book Craft-a-Doodle from…
