Contrasting colours can exhibit opposing tonal values, saturation levels and contrasting hues. Chevreul (1855) referred to 'complementary’ hues; similarly, Itten (1961) defined contrasting hues as those on opposite sides of a colour wheel model. In colour design, contrasting hues can intensify each other, via the impact of simultaneous contrast. Contrasting colours add vibrancy and can be used to create focus.
