Viking long house with a stone-lined hearth in the middle. A fire was kept for cooking and heating and the smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. The hall was often smoky and smelly. The floor of the hall was made of hard-packed earth, covered with reeds or straw. There were long, wooden platforms along each side of the hall against the walls where people slept at night, using pillows and quilts filled with feathers or down, and blanket and furs to keep them warm.

The Viking Longhouse of Norway. Only a few Vikings lived in towns. Most of them lived in the countryside in Longhouses. The longhouse had usually one large room. The walls were made of wood, and the roof was covered with turf. You can find Longhouses in several districts in Norway, from south to the north of the country.
