a person cutting fabric with a yellow tape measure

Here is a quick tutorial on how to break down a shirt so it can be used in a memory quilt or a recycled clothing quilt. The point of this tutorial is to show you how to get the maximum amount of fabric out of each garment. It's imperative that you get the most out of each and every piece of clothing you chose to use in a quilt. Here's how... Start with a shirt! This shirt is a medium so I can show you how much fabric you can get from ANY size. Of course an XXL would be best because it has a…

two quilts hanging on clothes pins in the woods with trees and grass behind them

The original post for these quilts was just over two years ago. This set of mini-quilts was made for a family of five siblings to remember their father. I've received several questions about reproducing the design for the first and third quilts so thought I'd share that information here so that you can make one, too. One frequent question is about how to size the finished quilt to be bigger or smaller. Both of these designs are based on an eight block by eight block grid. In other words…

shirts are lined up on a shelf in a closet, with one folded and the other unbuttoned

Creating a quilt from old mens' dress shirts is a perfect way to recycle otherwise unusable household items. Rather than throwing the shirts in the garbage and taking up landfill space, a quilt will turn the shirts into a useful item for the home. The quilt can also honor a loved one.

a quilt hanging on the side of a door with it's edge pulled up

This quilt is a total knock off from one I saw in a magazine. It's made almost entirely of recycled/upcycled material. I cut up shirts from Leslie and my husband's closets and sheets I've been collecting over the years. This is one of four quilts I recently took to my quilter. I gave her some direction on what I wanted, but then turned it over to be done with as she saw fit. I think she gave it a very nice texture. The backing is the lighter blue ticking stripe. It was a sheet in a previous…

a blue and brown quilt on top of a bed

In honor of Peter's men's shirt sew-along, here are some photos of the recently finished shirting quilt. It's a basic nine patch pattern with ivory flannel sashing between the blocks. There are 12 shirting fabrics in brown and blue. Most were upcycled from men's shirts and a few fabrics came from Happy Stop in Oakland, where the hit-or-miss inventory is $2 per yard. I wanted something quick, warm and comfortable, but it turns out that nothing queen-sized is ever quick. The warm and…

a close up of a patchwork quilt on a wooden floor with wood planks

Last night I worked into the wee hours of the morning to finish the top for the second memory quilt. I was inspired by the Colorbrick quilt at Stitched in Color, but I had to adjust the measurements to maximize the oddly shaped shirt fabric. I'm planning to baste it today (the bane of my quilty existence) and start quilting on it this evening or tomorrow after church. I'm not as enamored with this quilt as I was with the first memory quilt, the Western Kaleidoscope, (although it is growing…
