I need a project that is big, energetic, colorful and fun for my students right now. They have the wiggles big time and I think that lack of recess due to the weather is playing a big part. So I thought we'd use up some of our paint in our trays, use some of this large yellow construction paper I had in my closet and go crazy with some printing and painting. Here's the video lesson, if you are interested! Have fun!

Art work is starting to pop up in the hallways of SJV! Here is some colorful and bright oil pastel work done by the 1st graders. We were inspired by contemporary artist, Jim Dine. Dine creates paintings and sculptures using hearts as the subject matter. We all agreed that his work was positive, fun, and beautiful! We also separated our background and hearts using warm and cool colors! Here are some examples of the student's work: Great work first grade!

Then we transitioned to talking about the technique of embossing in aluminum (or repoussé or repujado) - so many different ways you can take this project. After all was said…

So this lesson was an extension to a texture and variety painting lesson I did with my first graders. The way that my scheduling went.. I had an extra day with some of my first grade classes.. so we looked at some Jim Dine artwork... then went to work on our own versions! Students folded a piece of 9"x9" drawing paper in half (both ways), drew a heart in each square, and then went to town doing crayon rubbings and drawing pattern (a reinforcement of what we did earlier in the week). Once…
