Declared 2-27-1987 The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indianapolis 500, first held in 1911. The track, built in 1909, is the world's oldest continuously-operating automobile race course. With seating of over 250,000, it is also the world's largest sporting facility.[23]
