Embroidery (or free motion appliqué) can add a personal twist to your purchased wardrobe and it can easily theme your next sewing project. All you need is a bit of inspiration and excercise... the more you try the better your outcome will look! The following tutorial will mix pictures of two of my projects, but most of the steps are the same. Option 1 is free…

some type of embroidered fabric with the word go written in large letters and flowers on it

Hello, While I'm mulling over sofa coverings I've created the tutorial on free motion machine applique that some of you asked for. This is the way I made the Milkchurn Cottage picture. This is my old wheat bag cover. Rather yukky. I'm going to make a new one from this vintage embroidered tray cloth... and scraps of cotton fabrics left over from other projects. If you move the fabric diagonally you will cover a lot of the fabric and lay colour down quite thickly. 5. Try to make a leaf shape. The…

Thank you for all who read their way down to the end of my last post - it was much longer than first anticipated! I hope you've enjoyed visiting the blogs I nominated (apologies in advance for the Google-suggested translation for a certain sentence in Ingrid's post - I have suggested an alternative to Mr Google, but he's ignored me so far!). Right, where were we...free machining, I think! In class we have been continuing to practice our free machining skills, now using free motion stitching…

some pieces of paper are laying on top of a map

Free motion embroidery, free motion sewing, or raw edge applique allows you to turn one your favourite pictures or sketches in a piece of fabric art. This technique provides you with full control over the picture - by dropping the feed dogs on your machine you guide your picture through your sewing machine to create the look you want. For your background fabric, choose something firmly woven such as calico, cotton or even linen.
