a child's drawing of a turkey with colored strips on the paper and crayons attached to it

The August art session with my little "firsties" was a HUGE success. We created "Wild About 1st Grade" self-portraits. They turned out so dang cute! It was a lot of fun to combine some guided art along with "do your own thing" directions. The bulletin board is adorable. We'll be adding their writing prompt responses to "I'm WILD About 1st Grade Because..." as soon as we finish the edit process. I created a file with the guided art directions, supply list, and writing prompts. Feel free to…

four colorful fish are hanging on the wall next to each other in an art project

This lesson is an original by Julie Werkman, who I student taught with 25 years ago. It is a great lesson for teaching the elements of art! Line, shape, color, texture, and value are all worked in! Any fishy book of your choice maybe the inspiration! First, we paint some light to dark blue waves on a large 18x24 blue construction paper for our fish bowl. I pre-trace the fish bowl on the back of the paper before the next class, then students cut out and add seaweed and rocks! After painting a…

First grade artist learned about the life and art of Romero Brito by looking at a slide show and you tube videos about him. Click here for the Romero Britto Slide Show We were inspired by his cats and dogs and created our own pets Britto style. We used patterns and lots of colors! This lesson has been modified from one seen on Pinterest at some point. :)

a child's drawing of a bird on a piece of paper with colored crayons

Today was day one of week three and man oh man has it been interesting so far (aside from a kindergartener throwing up on my brand new carpet today)! As many of you know I started at a brand new school this year - so I've had to start from scratch with my art program! I'm not sure why I just expected that the county would give me additional money for start up supplies (scissors, rulers, etc.)... cauuuuseee that didn't happen. In fact every art teacher in our county lost $50 each from our…

two colorful glass fish hanging from a window

Are ya'll familiar with the Japanese holiday called Children's Day? I think sometimes my students are convinced that everyday is Children's Day which is why nearly every night is Grape-Flavored Grown-Up Drink Day for this art teacher. But I digress. The real Children's Day is celebrated in Japan on the 5th day of May which, in case you didn't know, is the 5th month. It's a day set aside to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. Which, seriously, that part should…
