Émile Zola was born on this day (2 April) in 1840. Zola (1840-1902) was a French novelist, playwright and journalist. He was a naturalist writer and arguably the most influential French novelists of the late 19th century. Zola was nominated for the first ever Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1901 and subsequently also in 1902, but he never won. Some of his best works were Les Rougon-Macquart, Thérèse Raquin, Germinal and Nana.
