Drop the Paint Brush: Wood Paneling is Officially Cool Again

Growing up, the walls of my parents’ living room den were narrow, dark wood panels. No matter the time of day, the place felt like a cave. But though I finally persuaded them to paint them to match the rest of the house a few years ago (and it really did brighten the place up), after seeing these stylish spaces, I’m starting to rethink the wood paneling look. It’s definitely distinctive. It adds texture to a space and it certainly ups the warmth factor.

Taking on the wood paneling was a major project, we had high hopes of stripping all the paint back and letting the natural wood shine, that is until we discovered it wasn’t actually paneling, just wainscoting. We were obviously devastated but pivoted and quickly considered adding a wood panel to the inside, or maybe a decadent wallpaper - even something hand painted. But ultimately we wanted the room to have the dark moodiness we felt it was lacking. It is such a large dining space so we knew that going darker with it would only add to the elegance and cozy factor of the space. So we started researching faux techniques (hey if the Victorians could do it, we could too) and the rest was history!
