Cromford is a village and civil parish, two miles to the south of Matlock in the Derbyshire Dales district in Derbyshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 1,433. It is principally known for its historical connection with Richard Arkwright, and the nearby Cromford Mill which he built outside of the village in 1771. Cromford Mill (Arkwrights Mill), Derbyshire, England, is the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, developed by Richard Arkwright in 1771. The site had a year-round supply of warm water from the Cromford Sough which drained water from nearby Wirksworth lead mines, together with Bonsall Brook. He built a five-storey mill and ran the mills day and night with two twelve-hour shifts. The mill structure is a Grade I listed building.
