108 beads, each of which is thought to represent 108 afflictions or "klesas" in a persons life. The juzu also includes two additional parent beads, the 'mother' bead and the 'father' bead. The mother bead represents "mysticism" while the father bead represents "law". This configuration of Juzu beads is called a formal "nenju", and is typically used by the Nichiren and Jodo sects.
