Most of us therapists are driven by a sense of duty and care--a drive to help others. The root of this duty, this drive, is different for all of us. Perhaps we sensed our emotional lives were more complex than those around us as children, we find ourselves fascinated by others’ life stories, or we feel compelled to relieve others’ pain. Whatever our motive for becoming therapists, being a therapist is not our purpose. In this post, I cover the reasons why our work is not our purpose…

Do we need protecting from people? Sometimes, I think the answer is definitely yes, and sometimes not. Do I need to protect myself as a therapist?

I like to think about this in terms of protective factors. I have been doing energy healing and therapeutic work for 17 years. I know when my energy is off. Over the years, I have learned how to be deeply attuned to myself, and how to bring myself back to my centre.

a quote that reads, going to therapy is not all it takes to do the work

Unfortunately and fortunately, your therapist can’t do the work for you. It is on you to take responsibility for your life. Your therapist can help to facilitate change, support you, give you tools to better access your Self, and provide a corrective healing relationship, but it’s up to you to create change. . . . #therapist #change #healing #growth #houstontherapist #austintherapist #dallastherapist #therapistintexas #therapistofinstagram #therapistthoughts #psychology #wellness…

As a psychotherapist and certified trauma specialist, I get it, therapy isn't always fun. You may even find your therapist annoying encouraging you to try new skills, which can feel exhausting. 💪 However, moving through these feelings to gain insights, awareness of patterns, and heal takes time. Please don’t be discouraged and stick with it!
