Dear Landlord, I’m your future tenant and, I get it, your priorities are a little different than mine. You want things to be durable, long-lasting and, usually, cheap. I, on the other hand, would really love them to look nice. I heard you’re doing a little work on the place before I move in so I wanted to share some do’s and don’ts, my wish list and no-no list. Some of them come at a cost, but others won’t cost you a penny.

It can be difficult as a renter to make big changes in a kitchen, but it’s not completely impossible. Take this kitchen transformation with funky renter-friendly checkerboard floors, for instance, or this one that completely changes the look of the cabinets and counters but can be easily undone when it’s time to move out.

The kitchen is so dramatically different!

We did a mini DIY kitchen makeover in our rental. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the guts to commit to since this space isn’t our forever home. I can now honestly say that it is so worth it.

In the past couple years, we all spent an unprecedented amount of time in our homes. So no wonder so many people rolled up their sleeves and decided to either fix things that had been bugging them for too long to remember, or just go into full DIY renovation mode. And truth to be told, not everyone seems to have succeeded, as this previous article we published recently suggests.

It’s totally understandable if you think living in a rental apartment means you’re pretty much stuck with the bathroom and kitchen you’ve got. After all, even if you’re able to paint with permission from your landlord, cabinets, tiles, and flooring are all permanent items.
