On August 19, 1773, the official boundary was set between the Spanish provinces of Alta California and Baja California. Placed by Fransican friars, the markers indicated where Dominican control of Baja California ended and the Franciscan control of Alta California began in an effort to build and maintain the Missions.

20th Mission: San Rafael Arcángel was founded in 1817 as a medical asistencia ("sub-mission") of Mission San Francisco de Asís. It was a hospital to treat sick Native Americans, making it Alta California's first sanitarium. Founded December 14, 1817 by Father Vicente de Sarria.
