Technology has become the architect of our intimacies

Marilyn R. Gardner’s brother died in February, just before the pandemic reached around the world. Her family’s plans to gather were postponed indefinitely, and now they grieve in isolation. Growing up in Pakistan, Gardner learned the importance of bearing witness to grief by simply being present. As losses mount up around the world, this comfort is impossible for their survivors. Jesus’ own experience of grieving alone is his way of bearing witness to us in this sad and lonely hour.

Whether sublimated or made explicit, that longing feeling so specific to the queer experience has always existed in the movies. A new series on the Criterion Channel dives into this richly layered but long-suppressed cinematic history.
