an abstract painting with multicolored lines in the center and on top of each other

I found this easy little hand art project on theforestroom last week and thought it would be a clean and a simple project to do in my daughter's 3rd grade class... Well, it's not as easy as it looks- they had to really concentrate to complete. This is a really clever way to also document your child's hand size/age. My lines were not the straightest! Simple Instructions: With a pencil, trace your hand & fingers perpendicular (or exactly vertical) to the paper. Start at the top of the paper…

a person is working on some art work with bees and honeycombs in the background

Last month, 3rd grade started this little project, after I was inspired by the Instagram post of the incredible art teacher, Ms. Rogers! You can check out her IG here! I believe they painted their backgrounds, but since we're still art on a cart this year, we had to improvise! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Pencils Hexagon tracer Crayons Sharpie Markers Crayola Oil pastels Day 1: We draw our bees together. I do a little directed drawing, then we trace with Sharpies, and color with…

art project for children with colorful hand prints

Third grade used warm and cool colors and pattern to create these tempera paintings. The students viewed artwork by native people and how their hand print was not only a record of who they were or where they had traveled, but also a way to sign their art. The students each used their hand prints to sign their paintings. Notice how the warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) advance and the cool colors (blue, green, and violet) recede? This color effect creates an optical illusion. The boys and…

This project came from the ever brilliant Mrs. Nguyen over at her blog. I Can statements: I Can tell you something about Australia. I Can create an artwork in the style of Aboriginal Dot Art. As i've mentioned in other 3rd grade "travels" my goal is to give my students the biggest picture of a culture or country as I…

some kids are sitting at a table making paper flowers

I love Georgia O'Keeffe's large flower paintings. They are great for teaching ANALOGOUS COLORS and VALUE. I have the students start with a white 18x18 square. We draw the flower as big as the paper. We start with a circle close to the center, and three petals that stretch towards the corners or side... they have to be spaced apart, not touching. Then we draw a couple more, starting the petals off the sides of the others. I have 4 classes, so each class works with one analogous color group…

four brightly colored owls sitting on top of a table next to a green piece of paper

Third grade is finishing up their owls this week. This will always be one of my favorite projects! I just love the combinations of colors they use and the white accent lines just finish them off! They learn about symmetry and spacing, as well as the importance of a single 1/2" smidge of space! :)

two paintings with buildings and animals on them

Joel Scholten on Instagram: "Third grade just finished their @john_behnke inspired cityscapes! Students flexed their imagination while Focusing on background, middle ground, and foreground. We also discussed creating a story through our art and students used their imagination to create a giant animal or monster terrorizing the city! John Benke is a great example of both concepts! I will continue to share more! If you’re interested in this lesson, I will put my process reel in my stories, but
