PENN STATE – VINTAGE – Boxing, shown here in Rec Hall circa 1940, was among Penn State's most popular intercollegiate sports in the 1920s & '30s, sometimes drawing larger crowds than football. On a Saturday night, wrestling and basketball contests were just “warm ups” early in the evening, and boxing was the main event. In 1932, Penn State won the first official national championship in the sport. After WWII, boxing's popularity declined sharply and the sport was discontinued in 1954.
