London 1920's. A young boy with a policewoman Ask The Dust, British Police, Metropolitan Police, Victorian London, London History, Police Uniforms, Police Women, Old London, Vintage London

The last picture in this set shows a boy of about 8 or 9 in the company of two policewomen, who are looking at him benevolently. However, he looks anything but happy and seems to regard the cameraman with suspicion. The photo was taken in the east end of London and that probably means he's from the slums, a poor family, or perhaps no family, and that his life is unlikely to be a bowl of cherries. The Wall Street crash and subsequent great depression are just a few years away, but if he…

Lovely atmospheric photograph of Waterloo Place, London in 1899 by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne Victorian London, London History, Walking In The Rain, Horse Drawn, Old London, Foto Art, Vintage London, Baker Street, British History

This is another photograph by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne and dates from 1899, it shows the view from Lower Regent Street junction with Waterloo Place looking south across Pall Mall to the Duke of York Column. The Guards Crimean War Memorial is in the centre and the Athenaeum Club is at top right. The building on the left was demolished in 1909 and replaced with Cox's Bank, that same building is now a hotel.

London's growth accelerated during the 18th century, and it was the world's largest city from about 1831 to 1925. This growth was aided from 1836 by London's first railways which put small countryside towns within easy reach of the city. The rail network expanded very rapidly, and caused these places to grow whilst London itself expanded into surrounding fields, merging with neighbouring settlements such as Kensington. Rising traffic congestion on city centre roads led to the creation of the…

Camden Town in the 1930s Camden Road, Historical London, Kentish Town, Camden London, London Vintage, London History, London Pictures, Camden Town, London Transport

The trams and vehicles date this picture to sometime in the early or mid 1930's. The tram system was swept away from this part of north London when trolleybuses were introduced around 1938. The tram on the far left of the picture is bound for Chalk Farm, where it will terminate. The tram just seen on the far right will probably follow the tracks round the curve into Camden Road. The tube station was opened in 1907 by David Lloyd-George, President of the Board Of Trade and soon to become…

Babel Aesthetic, Dickens London, London 1800, 1800s Aesthetic, Historic London, 19th Century London, Historical London, England Aesthetic, Victorian England

Good old Leon and Levy where would I be without them. There is a Police Officer standing on the traffic island in the middle of the photograph, he is probably from POW. On the left is a hoarding surrounding the building site for what was then known as the New Government Offices and is now The Treasury; work was started in 1899 and completed in 1915 so I may be on the cusp here. Lovely bonnets Ladies.
