Chippendale mahogany block-and-shell-carved secretary, Goddard-Townsend, Newport, Rhode Island, c.1760-1770 (made for Nicholas Brown of Providence, Rhode Island). If one piece were to be selected to represent the contribution of the American furniture craftsmen, this masterpiece would have few rivals. Its magnificent stteliness & towering proportions epitomize the preference of the colonial artisan for the vertical emphasis. This secretary is one of the nine known six-shell examples.

Early Chair Table having a two board oval top, tilting on beautifully shaped arms all on vase and ring turned legs joined by stretchers above ball feet. All original and retaining old brown paint. New England, circa 1785. Top size: 51¾” X 47¾”, height 26”. (Shown with top up)
