Butterfly finger puppet
Are your children inspired by the butterflies in our Butterfly House? Bring the fun home with this finger puppet tutorial.
You will need:
• Thin card (A5 size approx. 15cm x 21cm) • Paint 2/3 colours • Half a pipe cleaner • Paint brush • Pencil • Ruler • Sticky tape • Scissors • Scrap paper or cardboard
Step 1:
Fold your A5 card in half. Using the folded edge as the starting point, draw half of your butterfly wings. It looks a bit like a big number 3. Try and fill the entire page with the wing shape.
Step 2:
Measure along the centrefold and mark the middle of your wing shape. Then measure and make a top mark ½ cm above and a bottom mark ½ cm below your centre mark.
Step 3:
From the top and bottom marks draw a 1cm/2cm line horizontally into the wing shape. (Approx 1cm if your child is under 4 and 2cm for over 4)
Step 4:
While still folded in half, cut out your wings and along the horizontal lines.
Step 5:
Open up the butterfly and push forward the rectangle formed from the cut lines and crease. (At this point you can test to see if your child’s finger fits in the loop. If it needs to be bigger fold it in half and cut it to fit.)
Step 6:
Lay out your scrap paper / cardboard and place on your butterfly on top. Paint one side of your butterfly, using a good amount of paint, fold over and open up to reveal your print. Then leave to dry.
Step 7:
Once dry, fold your pipe cleaner in half and tape on the back of your butterfly at the top.
Step 8:
Now slot your finger underneath in the loop created and make your butterfly fly.
