GREAT ‘SHORT WALKS AND DAY WALKS’ IN 1066 COUNTRY
There is more to Hastings and St Leonards than the promenade and if the promenade gets too crowded a History Walk is a great alternative for those new to walking or for those who want a little bit more of a challenge and are looking for new ideas.

This Battle Circular Anniversary Walk is the final walk of 1066 Harold’s Way, a 100mile long distance walk from Westminster Abbey to Battle Abbey. The walk links with 1066 Harold’s Way, 1066 Country Walk, 1066 William’s Way Hastings to Battle and with 1066 Harold’s Way, The Final Journey which is to be published in 2018. This booklet provides a little of the background to the Battle of Hastings 1066 and the route covers some of the major sites and events surrounding the battle.
IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE BATTLE
And all was quiet in the Norman Camp. Orders had been given And Mass had been said Swords had been sharpened And Horses fed. And across the valley on Caldbec Hill Carried by the still of the night Came the sounds of singing And Saxons drinking Ready for tomorrow’s fight. Caldbec Hill and Telham Hill, The two opposing camps. Today’s perfect Circular Walks Safe from the swords and arrows Of a battle that shouldn’t have been fought. I want to tempt you with some short but exhilarating walks, a wealth of fascinating local history, good pubs and of course, good beer. Here is a selection of four Pub walks that encourage you to explore 1066 Country on foot and in the process, discover some tremendous country walks. I am not claiming they are the best pubs but they are ones that I enjoy, chosen for their location, beer and conviviality and the opportunity to walk, to explore and discover this countryside.

The key element of Duke William’s invasion plan was to gain control of the ridge at Senlac. He could then advance to dominate the rest of the country, marching east and west along the ancient trackways and north using the old Roman road. If the ridge falls to William, he can move to conquer England – it is a masterful plan as befits the Duke and, for the moment, the Senlac ridge is undefended and only seven miles from Hastings.

This walk follows the ancient ridgeways that legends tell was the route of King Harold’s Army to the Battle of Hastings, 1066. From Bodiam Castle, there is the line of the old Roman road to walk to the ridge at Collier’s Green and Cripps Corner. Vinehall Forest is reminiscent of the great Forest of the Andreasweald and leads to the approach to Battle and Caldbec Hill along the line of another old trackway that lies just to the east of the more modern toll road the A2100.
