Although the limited abilities of the Ethiopian Air Force assured near complete dominance of the air by the Italians, the Ethiopians were determined to not take it lying down. Aside from quickly discovering how to disperse and use cover effectively to lesson the impact of Italian bombings, their use of anti-aircraft guns was quite effective at harassing Italian pilots who strayed to low in their attacks.

An Ethiopian greets the Italian troops entering Addis Ababa, 1935. He was one of the 800 Ethiopian soldiers who were taken prisoner in the battle of Adwa , and whose left foot and right hand were cut off as punishment for siding with the Italians.

After their quick conquest of Ethiopia, Italy had short time to enjoy their spoils. As World War II consumed the globe, Italy made a vain attempt to expand into the British East African possessions. Although they briefly overran British Somaliland in late summer of 1940, the allied forces soon regrouped and began pushing back against the Italians, who were too far removed for the German assistance that saved them - for a time - in North Africa or the Balkans.
