The Revival of British Craftsmanship & Manufacturing
The Revival of British Craftsmanship & Manufacturing. As many of you know, I absolutely love natural materials and craftsmanship, and one of my passions is the importance of designing and making in the UK. In a world of mass production, it has always been an increasingly important ethos for me and equally for sustainability in my business. Craftsmanship is a sign of a creative hand at work, and alongside this, a creative mind striving to keep traditional skills and industry alive in the UK.
From Inspiration to Design: The story behind our new Moorlands trimmings collection.
From Inspiration to Design: The story behind our new Moorlands trimmings collection. Our new Moorland collection of trimmings celebrates my love of natural materials, with the inspiration drawn from the diverse landscape around our home in rural Somerset. The colour palette has been inspired by the natural flora and fauna found on the moorland and in the deep woodlands of Exmoor and the Quantocks, and the rock formations of coastal cliffs. Spotlight on... Pippa Blacker Fabrics | Helen Izzard | Somerset
Spotlight on... Pippa Blacker Fabrics & Wallpapers My latest Journal article is now on the website. This month it is all about the stunning designs from Pippa Blacker. Pippa's fabrics are stunning and one of my 'go-to' designers. Pippa designs her fabrics and wallpapers from her sketches, paintings and observations of nature. They are gentle, eclectic and understated, reflecting a relaxed and natural style. And equally as important, they are designed and manufactured here in the UK.
Creating Impact With Wallpaper | Helen Izzard | Somerset
Creating Impact with Wallpaper. I love using wallpaper to create an immersive and luxurious ambience in my Somerset interior design projects. Wallpaper disappeared many years and has really returned to the forefront of interior design in the past few years. Many of the independent textile designers now offer beautiful wallpaper collections. As trends return to colour and texture, wallpaper is a great way to experiment. Pop over to the website for my top tips for introducing wallpaper.
The Wonders of British Wool in Interior Design | Helen Izzard | Somerset
The Wonders of British Wool in Interior Design. Pure wool is a hugely important part of our UK heritage and has been used for centuries in the clothing industry as well as the interior industry. It also has some incredible credentials that are important for our planet and for sustainability. May's journal post is all about this incredible fabric, some of its important benefits in both interiors and sustainability, and some of my favourite 'go-to' wool producers.

The Importance of Light in our Homes | Helen Izzard | Somerset Interior Design
Winter has passed and Spring is finally here. And with the change in season comes a new light, as the sun starts to move slightly higher in the sky, the days slowly becoming longer and the long-missed dawn birdsong can be heard, creeping in through the windows at 6am. The seasons are changing once more, and light is returning once more.
Why British Manufacturing Matters To My Business | Helen Izzard | Somerset
Why British manufacturing matters to my business There is an increasing enthusiasm for and drive towards British brands, British made goods and British manufacturing over the past few years. Since the early 1960’s the British textile and weaving industry has been in decline due to inferior quality imports and many of our UK manufacturing companies moving their processes abroad, so it has become increasingly harder to find weaving companies and trimming manufacturers in the UK.
Simple Tips For Sustainable Interior Design | Helen Izzard Design | Somerset
Over the past year or so, I have been thinking more and more about sustainability in my projects, especially in an industry that is known for its waste. When I started my business, my ethos was to be ethically and environmentally responsible and to work in harmony with nature by using natural fibres in my designs and products. I also consider longevity in my design work too, by being thoughtful in the design production, ignoring 'fast fashion' interiors and by being sustainable in our processes.
A Winters Garden | Helen Izzard | Somerset
December & January are always a very quiet time in the interiors industry. So for this month’s journal, I thought I would choose a Somerset garden that has always inspired me, with its beautiful summer planting and it’s stark contrast to a beautiful wilderness in Winter.
The Beauty Of Traditional Tailored Lampshades | Helen Izzard | Somerset
The Beauty Of Traditional Tailored Lampshades. If you have ever fallen in love with a fabric design but wondered how to incorporate this into your interiors, fabric lampshades can be the perfect option. Smaller items such as cushions and lampshades can make a huge impact yet in a minimal way, with plenty of colour and scale of both size and pattern. Lampshades are the perfect lighting choice for winter interiors, when we close the doors, light the fire and settle down with a good book.
Choosing Perfect Colour Schemes | Helen Izzard Interior Design | Somerset
Choosing colour schemes can be one of the most difficult parts of designing your home. Not only is there an endless choice of paints and colours from many brands on the market now, there are also many nuances between different tones and subtle differences within one colour, so much so that the task can feel very daunting and even overwhelming at times.
My Golden Rules For Interior Design | Helen Izzard Interior Design | Somerset
I am often asked for interior design tips and where to start. While there are so many styles, products and colours available, there are many different ‘golden rules’ available, and every interior designer has their own guidelines, which we use in our work.
