Handweaver at work

Tying on the warp is one of the last tasks to be done when dressing the loom in readiness for weaving. Guiding each bundle of ends into a smooth group and tying a knot under tension takes patience and practice. The quality of the handwoven cloth depends on a good warp.

I’m enjoying this new biography of Jane Austen by Lucy Worsley. Lots of juicy facts and interesting references to follow up. As a self employed hand weaver its good to take a break sometimes!

Thrums Loom Waste Textile Sustainability

As a hand weaver there is always a part of the warp that can’t be woven on. There is a short space between winding onto the back beam and tying on at the front of the loom. This loom waste is typically called Thrums. I don’t actually waste it as a Textile Artist with a creative imagination. I collect it all together and repurpose it.
