Free sweet pea bunches please take read the sign at the end of the drive beside two yellow buckets overflowing with pink and purple blooms. I love an honesty-box shop but even sweeter than these are the kind folks who share their seasonal bounty with their neighbours and passers-by. In the autumn our town overflows with baskets of windfall apples but this was the first time Id seen flowers for the taking. They brightened a tough day and warmed my heart. Thank you generous gardener.

March is for magnolia pink petals unfurling and breaking up skies of grey. After weeks confined to the house I set out for a morning run- through the back streets past the church and down the lane to the stream. The birds are singing and all along the route I notice magnolia trees- small ones in back gardens; large ones on front lawns; towering expansive trees hidden away behind brick walls; a glorious specimen visible right across the valley in the garden of the big house on the hill.
