Baroness Masham lost the use of her legs in an equestrian accident in 1958, and went on to win multiple medals in three Paralympic Games, in swimming and table tennis. According to The Telegraph; “…Eight weeks after taking her oath, Masham made her maiden speech during the second reading of the 1970 Chronic, Sick and Disabled Persons Act. It was the first legislation in the world to recognise and give rights to people with disabilities, and seen as a ground-breaking step towards equality…”
In 1992, Betty Boothroyd was elected Speaker of the UK House of Commons, the first time a woman was appointed to the post in the more than 700 year history of the chamber. She had first entered parliament as the Labour MP for West Bromwich at a 1973 by-election. She resigned as Speaker in 2000, and was granted a life peerage a year later, as Baroness Boothroyd of Sandwell. She passed away February 26th, 2023, aged 93. #womeninpolitics

Jeremy Thorpe (1929-2014) had been leader of the Liberal Party since 1967, and was at his most powerful during the double election year of 1974 when he declined Edward Heath’s offer to form a coalition which would have kept the Tories in power. Thorpe held the constituency of North Devon from 1959, but was voted out at the 1979 general election, on the eve of his highly publicised trial for attempted murder and conspiracy. Although acquitted, his career never recovered. Read more. #history
