Gardenia taitensis (Tiare Tahiti, Tahiti Gardenia, Star of Tahiti). National flower of French Polynesia. Native to the highland shores of the South Pacific, it has the distinction of being one of the few cultivated plants native to Polynesia. The intoxicating sweet fragrant blossoms are creamy white works of art. Large flowers 3" in diameter, large glossy oval leaves.
The Queen of all Tahitian flowers for its purity and its fragrance is the “Tiare Tahiti”, a variety of gardenia that graces the hair of the lovely Tahitian women. The Tahitian are really attached to the Tiare, and it is always worn in behind the ear or attached with many flowers into floral crowns. Tradition shows that if a flower is worn behind the left ear means that one is taken, on the opposite ear side means that the heart is vacant for love.
