two deer standing next to each other near a building
Flashback again to some friends we made back in February: these are the wild deer of Nara park, and they are allowed to roam freely. Around the park, around its famous temple, in the shops, down the street and at the bus stops. GIRD YOUR LOINS. And your lunchbox.⠀ ⠀ #cutenessoverload #narapark #deer #wildlife #japanlife #streetphotography #urbanlife #urbanphotography #streetscape #flaneur #flaneurism #urbanexplorer #streetpics #streetshot #onthestreet #cornersofmyworld #cityliving #livingintheci

We're all about craftsmanship, and we know you love seeing our makers and processes. Including this lovely lady who's busy weaving Nishijin-ori, a traditional textile produced in the Kyoto district of Nishijin. Weaving originated in Nishijin over 1200 years ago. It uses many different types of coloured yarns (including the gold thread here - faency), weaving them together into decorative designs. We've lots of decorative textiles woven in Nishijin coming to store this autumn.⠀ ⠀ #inthestudio #at

Our Tiddles (AKA 'T-Man', 'BIG DAWG', 'The Big T', 'The Big G' and for more formal occasions 'Master Richard Tiddles Esquire') looking pensive this morning. Gets a guffaw in this household I can tell you, every time a pet-insurance letter comes addressed to 'Mr Tiddles' instead of us, due to some unknown clerical error which we don't have the heart to correct.⠀ ⠀ Reminded me of this lovely poem, 'The Naming of Cats' by T. S. Eliot. I must admit that most poetry usually eludes me but 1) I underst

Had to stop in the road and embarrass ourselves to take this shot but totally worth it. Massive envy of this suburban Japanese home: cantilevered polished concrete, soft under-lighting and a front window framed like a shoji room divider. Not to mention the raised front entrance and overhanging botany. Drool.⠀ ⠀ #architecture_hunter #architecturelovers #bauhaus #architecturephotography #architectureporn #architecturepilgrimage #designlovers #architecture_greatshots #japanesephotography #architect

These limited edition candles are made of the refined wax from fruit of the Urushi tree. Dating back to the 17th Century, Japanese candles (warosuku) were often made from Urushi before candles made from the oil of the Japanese wax tree replaced them. Kew Garden’s ‘Economic Botany Collection’ actually stocks traditional Japanese candles made from Urushi.⠀ ⠀ These warosuku have been made for us by hand in the Takazawa atelier in Japan, using traditional methods. More pics from our trip to the Udatsu washi (japanese paper) atelier in Echizen in May 2019. Japanese washi paper is made from three types of tree bark: kozo (mulberry), mitsumata and gampi. First the bark is cooked (shajuku), then cleaned (chiri tori) and beaten (kohkai) before it's sieved and ready to make paper. Mixed with water, the pulp is then submerged and shaken over a screen (the suketa) to make thin sheets of washi paper. Our washi paper kit replicates the traditional Japanese techniq
