During the project, we discovered that the spaces between the joists were filled with old building rubble. The rubble was an old coal mining byproduct previously used for sound insulation but is no longer suitable for use. This project involved fitting wide engineered oak boards on the ground floor, first floor and second floor and reconstructing the banister. The chosen boards were pre-finished with oil to shorten the installation time. Engineered oak stair cladding with modern white painted risers uplifts a family home, Epping Forest

We designed a bespoke contemporary solution cladding each step in engineered oak. We opted for painted risers rather than a full wooden clad, to avoid a sea of wood effect. Real wood gives strength to the staircase and, unlike vinyl, in time it doesn’t wear off on the edges. For the stairs the customers were happy to invest in engineered oak with a modern design solution of white painted risers to match the rest of the property.

Preparing a robust subfloor⁠ As ever, before we started work on the floor it was important to make sure the subfloor was robust. We laid a latex waterproof self levelling compound to make sure there was no residual moisture in the floor.
