To obtain the sacred boots, a life had to be sacrificed. When Kemmerich died, Müller received his boots. The boots were passed down from one individual to the next every time death occurred. It was considered a tradition. Some felt as if it was a luxury to get the boots because not a lot of soldiers had nice boots at that time. They must sacrifice something significant to be rewarded with a luxury like the boots.
