The trails on Madeira are particularly remarkable as many meander alongside levadas—ingeniously crafted irrigation channels. These essential waterways, expertly etched into the terrain, carry water from the island's verdant highlands to the communities below. They not only support local farming, generate hydroelectric energy, and supply fresh drinking water, but also serve as dizzying hiking paths.
Earlier this year, we set off to explore the diverse plant environments of Madeira. Our adventure started with walks along the rugged, exposed coastline and took us deeper inland to secluded waterfalls. In these moist havens, the richly-hued rock surfaces were adorned with layers of ferns, mosses, and grasses. #landscapeinspiration #landscapedesign #landscape #gardens #plants #plantlife #wildplants #allaboutplants #planthunting #plantingdesign #farlamandchandler
At the start of the new year, we embarked on a research journey to Madeira, exploring gardens and traversing the landscape. One of our numerous hikes took place along the northern coastline, where the striking cliffs are host to a rich variety of fascinating flora; Echium nervosum, Aeonium glandulosum, and Euphorbia piscatoria, to name a few. Upon reaching the base after a lengthy descent, the vista widened, revealing the cable car station; a much-appreciated ride back up the cliff to our start.
South facing banks and bare ground are important habitats for solitary bees and wasps, making their nests in the sand and soil. A real treat to see beautiful example of this habitat in Dunwich Heath. #landscapearchitecture #gardensforwildlife #ecosystems #wildlandscapes #landscapedetails #landscapeinspiration

Walking through the Heddon Valley in North Devon, a wooded valley which leads to Heddon’s Mouth, a rocky cove on the rugged coastline. Wildflowers a plenty but the carpets of Armeria maritima on the cliffs and silvery tufts of Potentilla anserina between the rocks were particularly captivating. . . . . . #heddonvalley #heddonsmouth #armeriamaritima #potentillaanserina #wildflowercarpet #rugged #wildspaces #wildgarden #coastallandscapes #coastalexploration #wherethewildthingsgrow #design

Today is winter solstice, with the fewest hours of sunlight in a day it marks the shortest day of the year. Although the winter solstice means the beginning of astronomical winter, it also means the return of more sunlight. . . . . . #sunlight #wintersolstice #wintertime #decembersolstice #sun #natureinspiration #woodlands #oaktrees #inthewoods #forest #snow #frosts #icy #winterweather #winterlight #naturejournal #mothernature #yule
