Making potions is an all time favourite. and so easy to do, Plastic bottles and funnels and plenty of water and powder paint or food colouring. This activity can cover almost every area of development in the Eyfs. What would make it even more exciting is if it was cooked up in the mud kitchen!! Role play, counting, measuring, colour recognition, language development, explaining and planning what to do next, sharing and many many more great learning opportunities :) v x
What's inside the boxes challenge which the children loved! 3 different sizes and weights which all made different noises (according to what was inside) encouraging the children to use all of their senses, and then write their guess on the box. Also great for prompting discussions with each other.
What is essential is to realise that children learn independently, not in bunches; that they learn out of interest and curiosity, not to please or appease the adults in power; and that they ought to be in control of their own learning, deciding for themselves what they want to learn and how they want to learn it.
