DENSITY ~ Kowloon Walled City, now demolished, was an example of super high density and uncontrollable growth. For a 6.5 acre space 46x the density of NY city, the city placed in no mans land in Hongkong attracted heaps of garbage, prostitution, drugs, and other various crimes. But it also generated a strange community and essence to be understood by those who dwelt there, missing this community once it was gone.

Inside the lost island of New York: Eerie pictures of the abandoned leper colony just 350 yards from the Bronx

Just 350 yards from the Bronx, North Brother island was first used as quarantine centre in 1885. It was soon a home to 6 lepers. Its most notorious resident was 'Typhoid Mary' the first healthy carrier of any disease ever to be identified who spent years confined in its bleak woods. This island was also witness to the 1904 fire on board the passenger ship, General Slocum which killed 1,021 people on a church outing. Closed in 1963, it is now a haunting labyrinth of crumbling ruins

SO cool. North Brother Island Quarantine Zone, New York: quarantine zone, leper colony and centre for drug addicts. Just 350 yards from the crowded tenements of the Bronx, North Brother Island was first employed as a quarantine centre in 1885. Closed in 1963, it is now a haunting labyrinth of crumbling ruins.
