GROTON, Conn. (Dec. 20, 2013) The Virginia-class attack submarine USS Missouri (SSN 780) makes her way up the Thames River and home to Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., after completing its first overseas deployment. U.S. Navy NR-1 Nuclear Submarine launched 1969, Groton, Conn. The missions that have been declassified include work on an undersea submarine-detection network, mapping of the ocean floor, and the salvage of parts of the space shuttle Challenger, which exploded over the Atlantic in 1986.
