Turquoise was one of the first gemstones to be mined. The oldest known use are Queen Zar's bracelets, the 2nd ruler of Egypt’s First Dynasty ca. 5,500 BCE. Sinai, Egypt was inhabited by the Monitu and was called Mafkat or “Country of Turquoise” because it was so plentiful. Egyptians were mining turquoise at Serebit al-Khadim on the Sinai Peninsula in 3000 BCE.
