5.6.1947 US Secretary of State George Marshall outlines "Marshall Plan" in which the US gave over $12 billion (approximately $120 billion in value as of June 2016) in economic support to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of WW II. The plan was in operation for 4 years beginning April 1948. The U S hoped to rebuild war-devastated regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, make Europe prosperous again, and prevent the spread of communism.
