Stourhead - near Mere, Wiltshire, England. The 1,072-hectare estate has gardens designed by Henry Hoare II laid out between 1741 and 1780 in a classical 18th-century design. As a collector of art – one of Henry's pieces was Nicolas Poussin's Aeneas at Delos, which is thought to have inspired the pictorial design of the gardens and passages telling of Aeneas's journey are quoted in the temples surrounding the lake. Many of the temples are inspired by scenes of the Grand Tour of Europe.
Druids Temple, Masham, North Yorkshire, UK - The Druids Temple, situated near Ilton, about 4 miles west of Masham is a folly created by William Danby of nearby Swinton Hall in 1820. William Danby (1752-1832) was made High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1784. He created the temple to generate work for the local population who were paid 1 shilling a day.
