The Alamo Historic Site is the old mission, later turned into a fort to fight the Spanish troops of Mexico, led by Santa Ana. This took place while Texas was still a part of Texas, and many called themselves Texican patriots as they fought for independence. After Santa Ana's troops were defeated by Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto, Texas became an independent nation, the Republic of Texas, for a time, before joining the union of the states.
