Fungal remediation refers to the use of fungi to remediate organic soil contaminants, primarily hydrocarbons. One group of fungi, Phanerochaete chyrsosporium , or white-rot fungus, produces a family of enzymes called lignin peroxidases, or ligninases, which have extensive biodegrative properties. Remediation of soil using white-rot fungus has been tested in both in situ and reactor-based systems.

The vast majority of Chinese cities monitored for pollution fail to meet Beijing-set standards, China’s vice-minister of environmental protection says. China is mulling declaring “war” on the pollution resulting from the country’s rapid economic growth.

Two white rot fungi Irpex lacteus and Pleurotus ostreatus and a PAH-degrading bacterial strain of Pseudomonas putida were used as inoculum for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil from a manufactured-gas-plant-area. Also two cocultures comprising a fungus with Pseudomonas putida were applied. After 10-week treatment out of 12 different PAHs, concentration of phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene decreased up to 66%.
