This is the first appearance of Benjamin Franklin in print, writing under the pseudonym of Silence Dogood, the outspoken widow of a minister.  This is the only surviving copy of the issue of The New-England Courant that contains Benjamin Franklin's earliest known published writing. The Courant, Boston's third newspaper, was founded by Benjamin's brother James Franklin (1697-1735) in 1721. Click the image to read the entire paper.

Mrs. Silence Dogood, was Benjamin Franklin's alias in writing. After Franklin became his brother's apprentis for the New-England Courant (newspaper), he was denied to write for it. Ben wrote a column for the paper, as Mrs. Silence Dogood. James, his brother, didn't know Benjamin was "Mrs. Silence Dogood" and when he found out, he was upset.
