Coin of King Offa of Mercia, Anglo-Saxon England. Before King Offa most people had not used coins since Roman times. They exchanged goods instead. Money made buying and selling so much easier and international trade began to flourish. Those who spoke Latin were able to communicate with people living in France, Germany and Italy. Letters written by King Offa to Emperor Charlemagne still survive today.
