Doune Castle, Stirling, Scotland. Recent research has shown that Doune Castle was originally built in the thirteenth century, then probably damaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence, before being rebuilt in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany (1340–1420), the son of King Robert II of Scotland, and Regent of Scotland from 1388 until his death.
Prince Arthur Tudor, c1500. This portrait of Henry VII's eldest son, who died in 1502 at age 15, was made during negotiations for Arthur's betrothal to Katharine of Aragon. Arthur holds a white gilliflower, a symbol of purity and betrothal. This work was later recorded in the inventory of King Charles I. It is the only contemporary portrait of Arthur and numerous copies were based upon it.
