Union Army 1st Lieutenant Alonzo Hersford Cushing will be awarded the Medal of Honor next month, 151 years after his death in the Battle of Gettysburg, aged 22. Cushing was killed whilst standing his ground during Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. His platoon was defending the Union position against Pickett's Charge, a major Confederate thrust that turned the tide in the Civil War.
Edward Porter Alexander served during the American Civil War (1861-1865), in the Confederate Army, in which he rose to the rank of brigadier general. Alexander was the officer in charge of the massive artillery bombardment preceding Pickett's Charge, on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
