Kirk Douglas went to Notre Dame and was a midshipman during college. He joined the US Navy in 1942 and served as a communications officer with ant-sub operations in the Pacific. He was attacked by a Japanese destroyer and received medical discharge in 1944.


Desmond Llewelyn | actor [Bond movies; such as Goldfinger] The outbreak of World War II in September 1939 halted his acting career, and Llewelyn was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the British army. In 1940, he was captured by the German army in France, and was held as a POW for five years.
