It may not have been the greatest pro football game ever, but Colts vs. Giants on Dec. 28, 1958 was the most important. The NFL championship riveted TV fans through four quarters - plus 8:15 of the first overtime in league history (final: Baltimore 23, New York 17). Madison Avenue decided the sport was hot; CBS locked in a long-term contract; and in 1960, ABC helped fund a rival league, the AFL.
Pat Summerall, His career in television broadcasting began at CBS after a successful 10 year run in the NFL where he served as a kicker for the Detroit Lions, Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. In 1981, Summerall was paired John Madden and for 22 seasons, the duo became the most successful broadcasting teams in the history of NFL sportscasting. Also he commentated on tennis and golf, serving as the voice of 27 Masters tournaments and 20 United States Tennis Opens. He was 82. (April 16th)
